Discover an operatic masterpiece!

Considered the great masterpiece of traditional Kunqu opera, The Peony Pavilion is a poetic and symbolic opera composed in 1598 by the Chinese poet Tang Xianzu. The three parts can be viewed separately or as a complete narrative. This mythical tale has often been compared to Shakespeare's famous Romeo and Juliet, also written in 1597; or to Monteverdi's Orpheus and Eurydice, composed slightly later (1607) and marking the birth of opera in Europe...
All three great tales tell of love resisting the distance of death, with the same suggestive poetry and moments of suspension that are truly magical. The troupe invited to perform The Peony Pavilion is made up of the greatest artists of the moment, considered to be national treasures living in China today. Hailing from the Jiangsu region near Shanghai, these musicians have been perpetuating the tradition of ornate, high-pitched singing for centuries, with precious costumes and unique make-up. Le Pavillon aux pivoines has not been performed in France since 1999, making the troupe's visit to France an exceptional event.part of the Franco-Chinese Year of Cultural Tourism and the 60th anniversary of the Croisements festival organized by the French Embassy in China.
