History of the Torch

When the Olympic Torch arrives in the host country, the spirit of the Games takes over. Before lighting the cauldron at the opening ceremony, the Olympic Torch, carried by a multitude of torchbearers, makes its way to the host city of the Games.

The first flame of the Paris 2024 Olympic Torch Relay will be lit on 16 April 2024, according to ancient tradition, using the sun’s rays, during a ceremony in the sanctuary of Olympia, in Greece, where the ancient Games were held.

From the Peloponnese, the Olympic Torch will travel to Athens to board the Belem and cross the Mediterranean Sea.

On 8 May 2024, in Marseille, the Olympic Torch will begin its epic journey through France. The “Bordeaux and Libourne” stage will take place on Thursday 23 May 2024.
